With the recent need to modify the delivery of instructional materials and to sustain the educational program during this time of the Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Zamboanga City High School (ZCHS) English department developed its first English Department website.

Aiming to improve the access to education for every learner, the said platform provides timely, engaging and informative and bite-sized content for the parents, students, staff and the community concerning the ZCHS English Department.

The 37-page website contains complete sections that include the portal to the learners’ resources in online distance learning, modular distance learning, educational television and radio-based instruction, and blended learning. These are the digitized CapSLETs, e-Books, educational apps, worksheets, video lessons and access to the national and local radio and TV-based instruction.

It also provides gateways to the students' organization of the department where the learners can still enjoy their membership in clubs like the Speech Club, Debate Society, Writers Guild, The LAMP and the Reading Club.

The downloadable section of the site provides hundreds of teaching resources that are useful in the new normal teaching scheme.

Alongside this development is the creation of the English Department Facebook page, the official social media platform of the English department and the English Department YouTube channel that were also developed and embedded in the website for the learners to stream educational videos as a supplemental lesson in their study.

With this platform, the department strives to improve communication, engage students' and parents' interaction, and deliver functional strength with the onset of safe, accessible and welcoming online learning.

The website was developed by Mr. Jamwhell V. Ortiz with the collaborative effort of the ZCHS English teachers. Meanwhile, the development of a new website with better bandwidth is still ongoing. This will replace the launched website and may serve as the official website of the English department.

In preparation for the onset of online platform as one of the modalities in distance learning, the Zamboanga City High School (ZCHS) English department conducted a Virtual Training on Online Modalities for Teachers last August 28-31, 2020.

With the unprecedented transformation of the education and teaching and learning process due to the Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, teachers also have to transition from in-person to virtual instruction online.

Aiming to improve virtual learning, the training targets to provide pedagogical skills to teachers in strengthening their literacy on online instructions through an in-depth orientation as a foundational tool in order to help learners acquire the required most essential learning competencies. It also intensifies the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

The training emphasized the exploration of online educational software and apps leading to the production of the learning resources and outputs like e-books, mobile apps, PowerPoint presentations, videos, gamified formative assessment,  online summative test, RBI and TBI scripts and Facebook Social Learning Group.

Hence, the English department was able to establish a total of more than 80 outputs to be embedded in the English Department website for the use of the  teachers and learners this coming school year.

The training was facilitated by Eleanor L. Jalonfrancisco, Antonieta Rowena G. Dagoy, Teresita A. Aguiling, Gemma A. Turabin, Jamwhell V. Ortiz, Loisa Rose T. Delos Reyes, Lizel F. Garcia and Dhara May T. Ponce with the support of the English Department Head, Ma. Loradel G. Delumpines.

Indeed, ZCHS continues to improve access to learning in order to sustain the mechanism of education.
