Oral Communication

Oral Communication is one of the core subjects in the Senior High School. This is an 80- hour requirement in the first semester of the school year. It entails to provide development of listening and speaking skills and strategies for effective communication in various situations. Under the new MELC- Most Essential Learning Competencies, there are five content standards and five performance standards expected from the learners.

21ST CENTURY LITERATURE

21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World is one of the core subjects in the Senior High School. This course aims to engage students in appreciation and critical study of 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World encompassing their various dimensions, genres, elements, structures, context and traditions.

PRACTICAL RESEARCH

This course develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills through qualitative research. It includes the nature and inquiry of research; the importance of qualitative research; identifying the inquiry and stating the problem; learning from others and reviewing the literature; understanding data the ways to systematically collect data; finding answers through data collection; analyzing the meaning of the data and drawing conclusions; and reporting and sharing the findings.

CREATIVE WRITING

This course aims to develop practical and creative skills in reading and writing; introduce students to the fundamental techniques of writing fiction, poetry, and drama; and discuss the use of such techniques by well-known authors in a variety of genres. Each class will be devoted to the examination of techniques and to the workshop of students’ drafts toward the enrichment of their manuscripts. Students learn how to combine inspiration and revision, and to develop a sense of form.

READING & WRITING

This course aims at the development of reading and writing skills as applied wide range of materials other than poetry, fiction and drama. The learners are expected to realize that information in a written text may be selected and organized to achieve a particular purpose; understand the relationship of a written text and the context in which it is was developed; and understand the requirements of composing academic and professional correspondence.

CREATIVE NONFICTION

Focusing on formal elements and writing techniques, including autobiography and blogging, among others, this course introduces the students to the reading and writing of Creative Nonfiction as a literary form. The subject develops the students skills in reading, and thinking critically and creatively, that will help them to be imaginative readers and writers.

MEDIA INFORMATION AND LITERACY

This course introduces the learners to basic understanding of media and information as channels of communication and tools for the development of individuals and societies. It also aims to develop students to be creative and critical thinkers as well as responsible users and competent producers of media and information.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

This course focuses on the development of communication skills in English for academic and professional purposes. The learners are expected to: acquires knowledge of appropriate reading strategies for a better understanding of academic texts; understands the principles and uses of a reaction paper/ review/ critique; understands the principles and uses of a concept paper; understands the principles and uses of a position paper; and understands the principles and uses of surveys, experiments and scientific observations
