   In the academic world, reading is the foundation of the macro-skills – speaking, writing, listening and viewing.  One would not be able to participate actively and sensibly in any intellectual conversation or discussion, if he/she doesn’t read.  One would grope for and run out of words and ideas to write when he/she doesn’t read.  One would find it meaningless to listen to any informative exchange of ideas, if he/she doesn’t read.  One would not find any relevance, importance and connection to anything viewed, if he/she doesn’t read. 

    Majority of the subjects in school are being taught based on a simple concept – read, synthesize, analyze and process information.  Reading skills and strategies develop a learner’s ability to understand different ideas with great ease.  Studies reveal that learners who read are able to focus on their lessons properly compared to those who don’t. 

    With all of these observations, the ZCHS English Department has committed itself to reach out to the Grade 7 students with Frustration reading level.  The Department desires to give them the opportunity to discover themselves and others and explore their community and other places through reading.  It also aims to open the door of the immense and vast knowledge that reading offers. 

      It is for these reasons that the Reading Haven, a Reading Intervention Program of the English Deparment, is conceived – a sanctuary for students with reading difficulties and a place surrounded with teachers who care.  Struggling readers are assured they are with teachers committed to be with them in their journey to become independent readers.

MISSION

To provide every learner of Zamboanga City High School with sufficient knowledge in reading and equip his/her with skills to explore this knowledge independently and to inspire others to develop the love for reading.

Reading With A Heart.

Our compassionate teachers instill learners the love for reading as to where everything will start; where the more they like to read the more they do it and the better they become.

We Read as One. We Learn as One.

Collaborative reading and teamwork is the key to the developmental supports. Paired reading, each-one-teach-one, team reading and other grouped reading task, ensures a unified goal.

Alphabetic Reading Strategy.

All reading strategies, approaches, and methods from basic and advanced and updated as a result of the studies conducted are applied to achieve the desired outcome of the program.

The Gift of Life: Reading

We inspire our learners especially the challenged readers where mostly are from the marginalized sector by providing assistance such as feeding program, school supplies and other supports for them to be motivated on how wonderful the gift of life- Reading is.

Every Reader is a Star

We believe that every learner and the challenged readers posses special talents and unique skills that need to be nurtured and strengthen for him/her to reach his/her full potential.

VISION

The English Department Reading Program aims to develop every learner of Zamboanga City High School to become a responsible, independent reader.

Making Reading Fun.

We provide a safe reading environment where criticism and discrimination are strictly not allowed. Every challenged reader is accepted and treated equally in a happy, fun and engaging activities.

Monitored. Modified. Moving Up.

Through our continuous observation, checking, record keeping and a shift to strategic modification and application on what is effective to ensure every challenged reader can step up to the desired level.

Independency.

This is our ultimate goal. Where all learners, the challenged readers can emphasize creative choice in what they want to read and learn and become productive individuals strengthen by the capacity to read, understand, interact and communicate.
